Music Director Inon Barnatan, returning in his fifth year, has created an exciting program titled “The Great Unknown,” exploring the joy of discovery and rediscovery, the delight in the unexpected, and the mystery of the exotic.
“Audiences will discover fantastical and otherworldly pieces, myths, fairy tales, dreams, and memories, reveling both in the canon’s most beloved works and in hidden gems from well-known, lesser-known and previously silenced composers,” says Barnatan. “Above all, The Great Unknown personifies the mysterious and intangible nature of music and how it continues to transform, inspire and surprise us all.”
SummerFest 2023 also sees the return of the Synergy Initiative, a series co-produced by Inon Barnatan and Clara Wu Tsai, conceiving concert events that combine different musical styles and performance elements such as dance to create a new experience that enlivens the senses and brings audiences to a new understanding and appreciation of the works. Some of the finest chamber musicians and performance artists will converge on La Jolla from around the globe, including Augustin Hadelich, Tessa Lark, Alisa Weilerstein, Anthony McGill, Conrad Tao, the Takács Quartet, Thomas Adès as composer-in-residence, and debuts including GRAMMY winner Louis Cato, among many more.
A highlight of the festival will be the world premiere of a reimagination of Carnival of the Animals, a whimsical story of our shifting societal values told through the lens of spoken word artist and activist Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Vice President and Artistic Director of The Kennedy Center; legendary dancer Wendy Whelan, Associate Artistic Director of New York City Ballet; and acclaimed choreographer Francesca Harper, Artistic Director of Ailey II. This commission, part of the Synergy Initiative, will feature festival artists Inon Barnatan, Joyce Yang, Geneva Lewis, and Gabriel Martins.
